Yet, few realize a fundamental truth: studying abroad, at its core, is a confrontation between an individual and a strange social environment. Just because you move into an international apartment or walk onto a Chinese campus does not mean you belong there. Instead, he grabbed his foil and walked into the fencing club. This was an effort driven by action: using a sport that requires minimal language skills but demands high physical commitment and shared rules, he anchored a social pivot for himself in the soil of a foreign land. Therefore, to break the deadlock, one must possess a clear self-awareness and take action fueled by heartfelt passion.

Another point that disrupts traditional perception is how we define “interdisciplinary capability.” In many people’s understanding, being interdisciplinary belongs to scientific research or theoretical crossovers in academic papers. But in this conversation, I saw how interdisciplinary skills function at the microscopic level of daily life. For an international student, switching from Western decentralized digital applications (where transfers, chats, and sharing are independent) to China’s all-in-one WeChat ecosystem appears on the surface to be a change in daily habits. In reality, it is the decoding of a brand-new underlying logic of social operation.

Furthermore, when facing consumer temptations, he perfectly combined microeconomics (budget management), spatial physics (dormitory capacity), and modern logistics (gravity limits on luggage when returning home) to deduce the optimal consumer decision. Even his ultimate goal in learning Chinese was to remove the “translator” inside his brain and directly face Chinese history and manga. This is true interdisciplinary capability: it is not a slogan in an ivory tower, but a comprehensive problem-solving ability. When a person is thrown into an unknown environment, they instinctively mobilize all dimensions of their cognitive reserves just to solve the question of “how to survive and live with dignity.”

Since we began these interviews last year, I have come to realize that the significance of conversing with international students goes far beyond a mere search for stories; it is a two-way enlightenment. As the interviewers of Andrew, we are also about to head to the other side of the ocean for our studies. While we seem to be interviewing others, we are actually looking into a mirror, searching for our own future problem-solving strategies.

At the end of the video, we presented him with fridge magnets and vintage cassette tapes. This was not just out of politeness, but represented the warmest acceptance of a visitor from afar by a local Chinese micro-community. This also reflects the Chinese philosophy of reciprocity and our aspiration toward a “Society of Great Harmony” (the common good).

Sometimes, we are simply too obsessed with perfection, to the point of treating life like an exam. But just as we concluded at the end of our conversation, life always happens outside the classroom. The ultimate value of studying abroad has never been to replicate a perfect version of oneself in a foreign land. Instead, it is about learning to allow oneself to experience chaos, allowing oneself to feel lonely, and then using interdisciplinary wisdom and the courage to proactively build one’s own ecosystem to settle down gracefully in any corner of the world.

To watch the interview, please visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmHwWcWdsqI&t=357s Nowdays, most people limit their definition of study abroad applications to grades, GPA, and standardized test scores.
