This exchange student from Liverpool, UK, is currently studying international relations at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in China. Previously in the UK, his courses focused on Western political relations and theoretical perspectives, addressing macro-level issues such as international order and power structures. Since coming to China, he has been exposed to more niche topics. He stated that he hasn’t felt lonely in China for long; he has built a stable social network through introductions from classmates and school clubs, and the social activities and employment support provided by the university have helped him integrate more quickly.
He recalled joining an American football team in the UK, where team training fostered a sense of belonging. Upon arriving in China, he also experienced a brief period of adjustment, especially regarding language communication. Sometimes, when he speaks Chinese, his fast pace can be overwhelming, creating a momentary sense of distance. However, he emphasized that Chinese students are generally very friendly, and it only takes time to adapt to the pace of communication.
His experience shows that loneliness is only a phase, not a permanent state.
